WALTHAM, Mass., Mar 19, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Actifio(TM),
the Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) platform company,
today announced details of its participation at the “Future of
Enterprise IT” conference in Boston, hosted by Pacific Crest Securities.
The event draws leading investment companies that view this event as an
important opportunity to connect with some of Boston’s most innovative
technology companies. Ash Ashutosh, founder and CEO of Actifio, will
present on the “Tech Disrupters” panel.

The conference is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 2012 from 8:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The “Tech Disrupters” panel takes place from 3:00-4:00
p.m. at the UMass Club Boston at 225 Franklin Street, 33rd Floor in
Boston. This is an invitation-only event; for more information, please
visit
http://www.pacificcrest.com .

As part of the “Tech Disrupters” panel, Ashutosh will discuss trends
impacting the future of IT, specifically examining the data management
and infrastructure demands that will shape the future of enterprise
storage, backup, disaster recovery and business continuity, including
the impact of cloud computing and Big Data.

The way many companies store and protect data today is
inefficient–requiring redundant copies to be stored across an
organization. Using separate solutions for backup, disaster recovery,
analytics and other functions, it’s not uncommon for a company to store
120 copies of the same data, stretching processing power, network
bandwidth and storage resources, and crippling IT budgets.

Actifio is driving the next wave of storage innovation by radically
simplifying the way data is managed
and protected by consolidating and transforming backup, disaster
recovery, business continuity, compliance, analytics, and test and
development tools into one SLA-driven, virtualized Protection and
Availability storage device. The award-winning Protection and
Availability Storage (PAS)
platform is recognized for the innovative use of virtualization that
can reverse the data explosion and shrink enterprises storage
requirements, saving organizations up to 90 percent on the total cost of
their data management solutions.

About Actifio

Actifio, the Protection
and Availability Storage (PAS) platform company, pioneered the
industry’s first storage system optimized for managing copies of
production data, eliminating redundant silos of IT infrastructure and
data management applications. By introducing virtualization into data
management, Actifio delivers an application-centric, SLA-driven solution
that decouples the management of data from storage, network and server
infrastructure and reduces costs by 10X. Actifio has helped liberate IT
organizations and service providers of all sizes from vendor lock-in and
the management challenges associated with exploding data growth. Actifio
is headquartered in Waltham, Mass. with offices around the world. For

Blue Coat Systems has added global threat defence, universal policy and unified reporting across its secure web gateway appliances to protect the user rather than the device.

Described as an always-on solution to protect the user wherever they are, the company said Unified Security enables the extended enterprise to expand its secure perimeter to include all users on devices across any network.

It said that in todays environment, securing the network means securing the user. Talking to SC Magazine, Dave Ewart, director of product marketing at Blue Coat, said traditional security solutions are not equipped to continuously protect, control and manage users as they move from headquarters to branch offices to remote locations and from desktops to laptops to mobile devices.

He said: “From home to work, I connect to three different networks and our approach ties the policy to me – it knows where I am and understands that I will use different devicesand that there may even be instances where there is a mix of work and play.

“This policy of technology allows us to understand that we have an acceptable-use policy that will change as I change my device.”

He added: “We apply a set of technologies wherever the user is, so policies are applied with no security gap. You can connect through the network, but we allow the user to connect directly to the cloud service so you are using the same policy.”

Global Threat Defence provides consistent enterprise-grade protection powered by Blue Coat WebPulse. The Universal Policy gives extended enterprises the ability to create global policies that seamlessly follow a user across all networks on all devices; while Unified Reporting delivers a single ‘pane-of-glass view into all web and user behaviour so the enterprise can identify security risks and take closed-loop policy actions.

Steve Daheb, chief marketing officer and senior vice-president of corporate and business development at Blue Coat, said: “The growing adoption of mobile devices gives employees maximum access to the corporate network with little of the protection they get within the four walls of the enterprise.

“This fundamental transition requires enterprises to shift from securing the network to securing the user by extending corporate security and compliance policies to all devices accessing the network.”

Philippe Winthrop is working for corporate America and he’s not apologizing for it. Far from it, he points out that consumers and working professionals are one and the same people.

Of course, as managing director of The Enterprise Mobility Foundation (EMF), he represents not only corporations but the one-person startups. And he’s very passionate about his job, a characteristic that plays out in his plea to get US Rep. Ed Markey, (D-Mass.), to rethink the “Mobile Device Privacy Act” as proposed.

Winthrop recently sent an open letter to Markey explaining his background (he lived more than 20 years in Markey’s district) and asking the Congressman to reconsider the wording of the proposed legislation. Winthrop says he agrees that consumer privacy protection laws need to be there, but not at the expense of wiping out a company’s right to protect its assets.

“He’s dead-on in terms of wanting to protect the consumer, but at what cost?,” Winthrop says. “He’s not appreciating the subtleties of consumerization of IT and BYOD and the real potential risks to an organization when those devices are not managed.”

The way it’s worded now, Winthrop fears more issues are just going to be headed to court, usually referencing the Fourth Amendment. In one case in Ontario, Calif., a police officer – Jeff Quon – used a two-way pager provided to him by the city and it was discovered that the officer used it to send text messages to his mistress. Even in an environment with an informal use policy in effect, it went to the US Supreme Court, which in 2010 ruled in favor of the police department/employer that read Quon’s messages.

In his letter to Markey, Winthrop cites other examples, one involving GPS and another involving application tracking. While consumer groups argue that location-based services are accessing “too much” information from a mobile device’s GPS, location tracking need not be a bad thing, he says. There are times when it would be in everyone’s best interest, such as emergencies, for a company to track an employee’s location.

Winthrop has offered to discuss his concerns with the Congressman, but as of late last week, he had not heard back from Markey’s office.

Meanwhile, EMF is gearing up for its “App-solutely Enterprise!” event it’s holding with 151 Ventures at the CTIA Wireless 2012 show in New Orleans in May. The enterprise event will be Monday, May 7, for CIOs and IT professionals who want to learn how to build, deploy and manage mobile enterprise applications. The event is free for people who are registered attendees of the CTIA show.

Enterprises continue to adopt open source at an accelerating pace in order to take advantage of the significant benefits it can deliver. How enterprises adopt, use and support open-source software in their organizations can impact budgets, as well as mission-critical goals and initiatives. eWEEK, with help from OpenLogic, distills an immense data set compiled over the past year into six key recommendations about open-source technology that every enterprise needs to know about this year. From trends on open-source adoption and use, to popular open-source software and licenses, to open source in the cloud, this presentation is designed to help enterprises understand how best-in-class companies are using open-source software today. Most enterprises today use open-source software for everything from desktop applications to mission-critical infrastructure, but many organizations have inconsistent support coverage for the open source they use, or IT departments lack technical support coverage altogether. Just as companies want technical support for commercial software, they need to evaluate their needs and options for technical support on open-source packages. For some enterprises, it makes sense to rely on internal expertise for support, while others require commercial support coverage for some or all of the open-source software they use.

March 19, 2012, 4:06 PM Despite the glut of social media and networking tools available, really, for several years now, enterprises are only beginning to leverage social applications, new research from CompTIA reveals.

The IT industry association said Monday that most enterprise social initiatives revolve around major (and obvious) social platforms.

“Social media and social networking are widely recognized terms associated with large public sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn,” Seth Robinson, director of technology analysis for CompTIA, said in a statement announcing the Social Business: Trends and Opportunities report. “But these terms do not fully convey the full range of social applications available to businesses.

Google’s announcement today that it would rename the Android Market to Google Play is the equivalent of Target renaming itself Toys R’ Us. What was once a general purpose department store open to consumer and businessperson alike is now 100% all about the fun.

Despite ex-CEO, current Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt’s background with enterprise vendors like Sun Microsystems and Novell, Google has never really put a ton of focus on enterprises, certainly no more than Apple has.

The obvious interpretation of changing the name of its Android storefront to Google Play is that Google is reducing its efforts marketing and catering to businesses.

I think, however, it could actually signal a new push towards businesses by Google.

Here’s my thinking, which is not the result of any inside information: the Android Market was already huge, with 450,000 apps. Those apps are now being intermingled with movies, music, e-books, etc.

The Android Market wasn’t built with enterprise in mind. Neither the flexible payment, pricing and high-touch marketing options desired by enterprise app makers, nor the security and app management capabilities that IT managers want.

Indeed, while general-purpose productivity apps like communications tools and document viewers were popular enough to surface in the Android Market, true enterprise apps – your CRM dashboards, your analytics viewers, your HR applets – tended to drown in that ocean of content. That problem only gets worse in Google Play.

The intermingling with more consumer content also means that many CIOs, already nervous about “crapplications” or malware-infested apps on the Android Market, may become even more hesitant about directing their employees to download their work apps there.

But…I think it’s impossible that Google is planning a major retreat from the enterprise market. It’s just too big and too smart for that. Nor do I think that Google believes that the Consumerization of IT trend will be so huge that it will overturn all traditional IT.

So I have to believe – and again, this is not based on any inside knowledge – that even as Google separates out its consumer-focused content, it will make an enterprise reboot, by doing one, some or all of the following things:

1) preparing its own Enterprise App Store, likely an aggregator or common cloud-based store tailored to showcase and demo these high-end apps;

2) opening up Android’s APIs more to make it easier for Mobile Device Management (MDM) software such as Sybase Afaria to build full-fledged internal Enterprise App Stores;

3) partnering with ISVs building Enterprise App Stores that are more tailored to business buyers than Android Market ever was or could be. These include SAP with its new SAP Store for Mobile Apps. I haven’t thought through exactly how such a partnership would best work.

So contrary to appearances, I suspect Google has something up its sleeve for enterprises. And I’m dying to find out what it is.
