Shift happens. Especially during the holidays. Thats the message from local community-building non-profit Go Local Tacoma, as it joins more than 150 communities across North America in the Shift Your Shopping holiday campaign, an unprecedented national effort that encourages residents to take job creation and economic concerns into their own hands by shifting their shopping to local, independent businesses. The goals is simple – start an annual tradition that strengthens local economies, expands employment, nurtures a sense of community and provides a more relaxed, intimate and rewarding gift-buying experience.

Were asking community residents to shift your purchases of food, cards, gifts, flowers and other holiday purchases to where it matters most, from your friends and neighbors at locally owned businesses. And while youre at it, see some familiar faces and enjoy the experience, says one of the programs progenitors, Joe Grafton, director of Somerville Local First in Massachusetts.

If youre going to make a shift, this is the time of year when its likely to have a tremendous impact. Americans will spend a substantial portion of their annual shopping budget between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. The National Retail Federation predicts about $700 per shopper. A family of studies suggest that if those dollars are shifted to locally-owned, independent businesses, theyll generate two to three times as much economic activity in local communities than if the money is spent at national chains or online.

Locally-owned businesses typically generate up to three times the local economic activity of their giant corporate counterparts because independents spend more money in the local area, including using more local goods and services – such as banking, printing, advertising, legal services, furnishings and so on. Through this so-called multiplier effect, the added taxes collected from local expenditures provide support for local schools, parks, law enforcement and more.

Based on statistical formulas, if just 10 percent of Tacomans shifted their spending to local, independent businesses, it would add up to tens of millions of dollars in local economic impact, and more than a thousand new jobs. And thats a conservative estimate. Moreover, annual surveys conducted in cities that are making the shift suggest these Go Local movements more than doubled revenue gains for local independent businesses on an annual basis.

And while Tacoma may be one of many cities across the nation endeavoring to make shift happen, the Tacoma Shift Happens movement represents a particularly bold effort, says Go Local President Patricia Lecy-Davis.

As much as we would like to think were unique in this mindset, were not, Lecy-Davis says. Were just breathing Tacoma life into it, and making it relevant to us. Usually this movement occurs in smaller communities, and a lot of them start as a survival attempt, like when a Walmart threatens their local economy. Tacoma is a fairly large city, with 250,000 people and 5,000 independent businesses. Were trying to do with a population of 250,000 what many people are doing in towns of 30,000 to 40,000 people.

As a general rule, the Shift Your Shopping movement is predicated on encouraging shoppers to shift 10 percent of their spending. In Tacoma, Go Local has worked to provide a less amorphous goal with the 10×10 Pledge.

Heres how it works. Local shoppers are encouraged do one or all of the following: spend $10 at 10 local, independent businesses; donate $10 to 10 local, independent non-profits; visit 10 local business districts and/or farmers markets; and/or attend 10 Go Local sponsored events.

Visit TacomaShiftHappens.com to make the pledge, and download a nice card that will allow you to track your progress.

ooo

Its been a while since Ive engaged in this exercise but I thought today would be a good day to bring it back. Lets take a closer look at the Tulsa Golden Hurricane with five questions for the Tulsa Worlds Eric Bailey (includes a bonus question with some food recommendations for those of you traveling to Tulsa from out of town):

1. What has been the biggest difference that youve seen with the Golden Hurricane from last year to this year as a result of the coaching change from Todd Graham to Bill Blankenship?

Poise and confidence. Blankenship has faced adversity in his first season as a college head coach, both on and off the field. He had to be the emotional anchor when three former players from the 2007 team died in an eight-month span, deal punishment when Damaris Johnson (the NCAA leader in all-purpose yards) was arrested for felony embezzlement just two weeks before the season opener and handle the loss of senior cornerback John Flanders (academics), who was the hero in last year’s win at Notre Dame. On the field, the team’s transition was slowed by games against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State (with a 12:15 am kickoff) and Boise State and the injury to GJ Kinne in the OSU contest.

Blankenship never flinched during all the adversity, which was impressive.

Blankenship’s coaching style is vastly different than Graham’s method and it’s really worked well for the Hurricane. Many wondered what Blankenship’s leadership qualities would be like at the college level (he was a very successful and well-respected high school coach at Tulsa Union and spent four years as a Tulsa assistant) and he’s been perfect for the job. His demeanor and quiet confidence has been infectious.

2. How has quarterback GJ Kinne improved? And are there any lingering affects from his early-season knee injury?

Kinne appears 100 percent following the injury in the OSU game. He really didn’t look himself against Boise State, North Texas, UAB and Rice but began playing his style in wins against SMU and at UCF during an 11-day stretch. I don’t think there are any lingering affects.

He has been helped by the three-headed monster at running back and an offensive line that’s a veteran group. Tulsa should have two 1,000-yard rushers in Ja’Terian Douglas (836 yards) and Trey Watts (731) and Alex Singleton has eight rushing touchdowns this season. Hes only been sacked twice in the last five games. For the first time in three years, Kinne (361 yards) won’t be Tulsa’s leading rusher.

3. Defensively, what are Tulsas strengths and how do you figure it will attempt to slow Houstons offensive attack?

Like Houston, Tulsa has solid linebackers. Curnelius Arnick is C-USAs leading tackler, averaging 12.2 stops a game. Shawn Jackson was the league’s defensive player of the week earlier this month and can make an impact rushing the quarterback, especially when lined up on the edge.

The secondary is a year older and, after learning a new system while playing against Landry Jones, Brandon Weeden and Kellen Moore, has
improved each week. The big thing is the defense isn’t allowing as many over-the-top passes as it did under Todd Graham.

In conference play, only one opponent has scored more than 20 points on Tulsa. UTEP finished with 28 points after TU took a 50-15 lead into the fourth quarter on the road.

Slowing down Houston’s attack is easier said than done. For TU to have any success, it needs to find a way to make Keenum uncomfortable in the pocket (which doesn’t happen often). When Keenum does find receivers, they need to try to make his throws as difficult as possible. It can’t allow Keenum to play catch with receivers all day.

4. How does the injury to Stetson Burnett impact the Tulsa offensive line?

Burnett’s injury shouldn’t be a large factor at right guard. His backup is Brian DeShane, a junior that 29 career games of experience. He started nine games at right tackle last season, including the win over Houston. Coaches said DeShane had been pushing Burnett for playing time all season.

5. What do you think has been the biggest key to Tulsas success in C-USA play this season and throughout its 12-game conference winning streak?

The Hurricane has won both ways in 2010 and 2011. Last year, under Graham, the team simply chose to outscore opponents (see the regular-season finale, a 56-50 win over Southern Miss). In 2011, the team has relied on its defense. In conference games, the scoring defense ranks No. 1 and there is disappointment if the team allows 20 points.

Something that I am interested in seeing: In September, the defense was still learning new coordinator Brent Guy’s system and playing Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State. I think Houston will be a true barometer of how much the defense has improved.

Bonus: For those traveling from Houston to Tulsa, what local places do you recommend to find the following: Good BBQ, a good steak and a good slice of pizza?

The following is just my opinion. There are plenty of outstanding restaurants for Houston fans to try out in the Tulsa area.

For BBQ, I go to Elmer’s BBQ, which is located around 41st and Peoria. I highly recommend the Badwich.

There’s plenty of good steak houses. One that I’d recommend is Doe’s Eat Place. It’s located on Cherry Street (actual address is 1350 East 15th street).

For pizza, I prefer Umberto’s, which is just a mile from the stadium at 21st and Harvard. New York-style pizza that’s really good.

For those coming up from Houston, drive safely and I hope you enjoy your time in Tulsa.

Cotton fell the most in more than
eight weeks on concern that Europe’s debt crisis will slow
global growth and trim commodity demand. Orange juice rose.

The Standard amp; Poor’s GSCI Index of 24 raw materials fell
as much as 3.2 percent as European borrowing costs surged amid
mounting concern the region’s leaders will fail to stem fiscal
woes. World cotton demand will be 1.7 percent lower than
forecast last month, leaving a “massive” surplus of more than
3.5 million metric tons, according to Cotlook Ltd., a research
company in Birkenhead, England.

“The world’s going to have enough cotton to meet its
demands,” John Flanagan, the president of Flanagan Trading
Corp. in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, said in a telephone
interview. “Demand is slow because of the economic situation in
the US and Europe.”

Cotton for March delivery declined by the exchange’s 4-cent
limit, or 4 percent, to settle at 96.48 cents a pound at 2:46
pm on ICE Futures US in New York, marking the biggest loss
since Sept. 19.

The fiber has tumbled 56 percent from a record $2.197 on
March 7. A bale weighs 480 pounds (218 kilograms)

“The commercial sector is still ailing, as evidenced by
the complete lack of demand outside of China,” Andy Ryan, a
senior-risk management consultant at INTL FCStone Inc. in
Nashville, Tennessee, said in a report.

Orange-juice futures for January delivery advanced 1.8
percent to $1.7185 a pound in New York, the biggest gain since
Oct. 24. The commodity has advanced 13 percent in the past year.

Inventories of frozen orange juice monitored by ICE have
dropped 59 percent to 24.4 million pounds from a year earlier,
exchange data show.

“Supplies have been a little tight,” Jack Scoville, a
vice president at Price Futures Group in Chicago, said in a
telephone interview.

People arent the only ones who love an old-fashioned turkey dinner with all the fixings. But while our stomachs can handle the heavy gravy, the greasy turkey skin, candied yams and the pumpkin pie, the meal is not one for our furry friends.

#13;

And if you think one little helping of any of the above wont hurt, guess again. Both dogs and cats can suffer serious problems if they indulge in what their pet parents are eating.

#13;

I know my 2-year-old Shih Tzu, Gabrielle, will be looking to sink her  teeth into her very own plate of turkey and fixings (she likes the breast), but not this time around.

#13;

Here are 10 things to consider to keep your pet healthy and happy on Thanksgiving, according to the website WellPet.

#13;

  1. Many of the traditional foods contain large amounts of fat which should be avoided. Gravy, turkey skin, the drippings from the turkey pan and other foods should be avoided. Excess fat can create problems with the pancreas and further aggravate an already overweight animal.
  2. #13;

  3. Pancreatitis is a very painful condition most commonly brought on by an excessively large meal or a meal with increased amounts of fat (there are other causes, but during the holiday season this is the most common cause). It stimulates the pancreas to produce large amounts of the enzymes needed to digest the nutrients. If there are increased amounts in the pancreas, sometimes these enzymes can’t get out of the pancreas fast enough and begin to actually break down the wall of the ducts and leak into the abdomen. This can cause vomiting diarrhea, restlessness, weakness, discomfort and can even be life threatening.
  4. #13;

  5. Bones should be avoided at all cost, especially the bones of birds as they are hollow and can break into very sharp pieces which will wreak havoc with the digestive tract.
  6. #13;

  7. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate should be avoided as there is a toxin, theobromine in all chocolate.
  8. #13;

  9. When it comes to our beloved family pets, the key word is moderation. Be careful that everyone is not slipping the pets a few tidbits from the table. Set the rules early on for who feeds the pets and when.
  10. #13;

  11. Watch out for dropped food, especially by our younger family members.
  12. #13;

  13. Make sure all garbage is secure and not left to tempt a pet when we aren’t looking. Cats and even some dogs can easily get on counter tops when we are enjoying our meal in another room.
  14. #13;

  15. Pets are also attracted to aluminum foil, wax paper and plastic wrap that has been used to cover foods. These items can cause digestive issues and even obstruction.
  16. #13;

  17. Some pets become nervous with all the excitement and may need a quiet refuge away from all the noise and excitement.
  18. #13;

  19. If you have a large family and there will be lots of doors to the outside opened and closed, be careful that there are no escapes into the wild that could ruin the day.
  20. #13;

Privacy advocates are raising concerns over a new technology being implemented by a couple of shopping centres that will allow them to track the movements of their guests using the unique ID numbers of their mobile phones.

The system, called FootPath Technology, uses a series of antennas located throughout a shopping centre to register a shoppers mobile phone, and then tracks its movements from shop to shop. This provides planners with detailed information about how guests navigate the shopping centre, which shops are most popular, and what areas might be under-trafficked. While its being used in the US for the first time starting on Black Friday at the Promenade Temecula in California and the Short Pump Town Center in Richmond, Virginia, the system is already in use in shopping centres in Europe and Australia.

While privacy advocates are concerned about the security aspects of logging and tracking a shoppers mobile phone ID, the system is completely anonymous and doesnt have access to the persons name, number or even what they purchased. It simply provides detailed information on where theyve travelled throughout the shopping centre, which is data that has been collected via other methods for years now. Both shopping centres are being upfront about the new technology, hanging signs that let consumers know theyre being tracked. But their solution for allowing people to opt out, by simply turning off their mobile phones, is akin to saying if you dont want to be tracked, then dont shop here. [Chicago Tribune via Examiner]

Occupy Wall Street protesters are training their sights on a new target: holiday shopping.

From Seattle to Long Island, New York, activists are planning a host of actions during the Black Friday shopping weekend — from marching on Wal-Mart Stores Inc. supercenters and organizing sit-ins at malls to cutting up credit cards and running faux stores to exchange used items and avoid consumerism.

Though the activities are set to begin Friday — the traditional start to the holiday season that kicks off early in the morning with a blizzard of discounts — they are part of a larger protest known as OccupyXmas that will continue through Dec. 25.

Consumer overconsumption has gotten us into this mess and the economic crisis to begin with, said Dana Balitki, a spokeswoman for the Occupy Wall Street protesters. The work were trying to do is to get people to care about the country, to get us focused on how we can take care of each other, redirect our resources and learn how to better connect with each other.

In Washington, Occupy protesters from Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham and Everett plan to gather at a Wal-Mart in the city of Renton, south of Seattle, Friday afternoon.

A similar protest is scheduled at the Valley Stream, NY, Wal-Mart where a seasonal worker died three years ago after he was trampled by shoppers rushing to buy big-screen TV sets and other items.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said the company planned on business as usual despite the potential disruptions.

Other groups are planning more subtle actions. Activists in Idaho plan to dress up as consumer zombies and wander around shopping centers to protest what they see as the numbing effect of conspicuous consumption.

In Chicago, protesters are planning a round of shopping caroling through a downtown mall. The protesters plan to sing on all five floors of the mall and to shout a series of messages that present a problem and then its solution.

Protesters didnt reveal all the malls they planned to target.

One of the gals is working on a whole series of Christmas carols reworked for economic injustice issues, said activist Sugar Russell, a student at DeVry University in Chicago. Were going to bring the messages to the masses in an entertaining way.

With 29 teams looking up at the first-place
Wild in the NHL standings Thursday,
franchise owner Craig Leipold had good reason to be thankful on
Thanksgiving.

A youthful corps on the Minnesota blue line?

No problem.

A first-year coach running the show?

Cool.

Riding a five-game winning streak for the second time this
season and one point ahead of Pittsburgh even though the Penguins
have played one more game, the
Wild have spawned a lot of optimism
around the Xcel Energy Center this month.

Hard to believe, Leipold said Thursday, especially because of a
kiddie corps on defense that includes Jared Spurgeon and Marco
Scandella, both 21; Justin Falk, 23; Nate Prosser, 25; and Clayton
Stoner, 26.

Over the summer, Leipold said, fans approached him to talk about
front-line additions Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi or veterans
Niklas Backstrom and Mikko Koivu.

Now, he noted, strangers praise the play and poise of the young
defensemen.

Its fun talking about those guys that dont get the credit
that a marquee player would get, Leipold said.

A former owner of the Nashville Predators, who lost 3-2 to the
Wild on Wednesday night at the X,
Leipold visited with Predators coach Barry Trotz before the
game.

The owner came away with a grin on his face.

Trotz, the only coach Nashville has had, said the
Wild and Predators are cut from the
same cloth: Both rely on excellent goaltending and solid defense
and work hard to manufacture goals. Although Trotz and rookie
Wild coach Mike Yeo arent much
alike, Leipold said, the parallel is their winning attitude.

What I feel in Mike Yeo is just a sense of confidence, that
hes in control, Leipold said. I sense our players, even when
were down one goal or down two goals, we still feel like we can
come back in the third period and win this game.

Exactly, center Kyle Brodziak said.

Brodziak, who scored a power-play goal against Nashville and has
five goals and four assists going into todays game against
Edmonton, said it stems from confidence.

That confidence, he explained, comes from the teams work
ethic.

Its not like confidence is a magical thing that disappears and
comes back, Brodziak said. It comes from the work weve put
in.

Minnesota outplayed the Predators through much of the game
Wednesday night but trailed 1-0 early in the third period. With
four straight victories and a good effort to show for their
evenings work, players could have been content.

They werent, Brodziak said.

Its the reward that makes all the work worthwhile, he said.
When youre working that hard every day and you see results and
youre starting to get wins, the reward makes everything worth
it.

Yeo said that two intense practices leading to Wednesdays game
demonstrated that nobody is complacent, even during a winning
streak.

That was what enabled Minnesota to come back with three
third-period goals to defeat Nashville and stay atop the
standings.

And keep the smile on Leipolds face.

I wake up in the morning going, Are we really in first place
in the National Hockey League? We didnt think it would happen
this quickly, Leipold said. But theres a long season; a lot of
things can happen. What matters is at the end. Its not in
November.

But, having said that, its really nice to be here in
November.

Briefly: Yeo said Josh Harding will start in goal today.
Backstrom missed Wednesdays game but will return today.

– Defensemen Greg Zanon and Mike Lundin practiced with the
Wild again Thursday, but neither is
ready to play. Defenseman Marek Zidlicky, sidelined by a
concussion, skated on his own Wednesday but experienced recurring
symptoms and did not skate Thursday. Forward Guillaume Latendresse
also is still sidelined because of a concussion.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The holidays mean lots of food, fun and decorations, but all that holiday joy could be dangerous for the fuzzier members of the family.

I give this speech probably a thousand times during the holiday season, said Veterinarian Dr. James Askew. The bottom line is I just want you to think of your pets as pets and not little people.

Each holiday season veterinarians are overwhelmed with sick pets that have gotten into the holiday feast or the holiday decorations.

According to Askew, the fatty meats and sweets that are abundant during the holidays can do a lot of damage to your pets digestive system.

Every year I am inundated with issues [like] chronic diarrhea, vomiting. We do quite a few surgeries every year to remove Christmas presents, bulbs and ornaments from pets, said Askew.

If youve watched the classic Christmas movie, Christmas Vacation, you are familiar with the scene in which the family cat gets a little too friendly with the Christmas tree lights. While the movie is a little melodramatic, electrocution is a big danger for curious pets.

It usually ends up having some hair loss. Nails will fly off. Teeth can actually burn and break and shatter, said Askew.

The vet says to keep your pets in mind while decorating by keeping cords out of sight, and decorations out of reach. He also says no slipping food scraps under the table.

He also says to make sure to keep pets comfortable if they are outside.

A lot of animals get displaced and put out side for a few weeks. Keep in mind that the cold weather as well as the wet weather were having can produce a lot of problems right now, said Askew.

Askew points out that several Christmas plants like mistletoe and poinsettias are very poisonous.

He suggests that pet owners keep an emergency contact number for their veterinarian on hand, just in case.
